why worry just use it in a language string (you do use language strings ? ) this allows the admin
to decide on what its called

I don't like the idea of calling them "topics": a topic might be a better word for grouping the
discussions (aka, the word topic would refer to a forum board). Threads are what I am used to, but
it's an older term. I like the idea of calling threads "discussions" though

I have to agree with you on this one. I'd like to think of each post as something that consists of a topic and message. In fact, that's how many of the earlier forums were conceived. A thread is just a line (a thread) of posts (topics and messages). That's how I've always thought of it.
