The contribution level system is a system which takes many factors including post count (this will need to be nerfed), big post count (posts which are larger than a certain size), topic count (these are weighed more heavily than even big posts), etc.
The idea of this system is give you a short easy to digest number which represents your contribution to a community. Alternative approaches that I've seen are similar to this system (contribution points), however exposing the contribution points directly can be fairly overwhelming and confusing.
By default, even posts made in profiles will count towards this (configurable), although policies may vary from forum to forum.
This feature was implemented as I took a look at the more traditional approach (post counts) of gauging someone's contribution to a community at a glance, which tended to highly favour short posts spouted out in rapid succession.
